Destruction Strangers Blasting up the Expedition Ladder

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 11:13 PM PST

(Alternate title: There are decks that compete with Sling, you just have to find them)

TLDR I just want the decklist: GO HERE

To understand the idea of this decklist, I must first help you understand one of the fundamental apsects of Eternal: who is allowed to play units on the board? Many people will respond "Why two, of course, you and your opponent!".

    These people are fools.

When playing a game of Eternal, only you are allowed to play units. Any opponents caught doing so are breaking the rules, this mistake needs to be rectified. Violently, if need be.

To accomplish this, I am running 26 pieces of interaction that will force my opponent into obeying the rules in a few different ways. Each different type has a unique spin on the matter: Blazing Salvo fetches even more interaction enforcement tools, Kairos' Choice can occasionally allow your units to dodge dangerous damage, Send an Agent reminds your opponent that factionless units are fair game, whilst Voprex's Choice is able to kill off Rolants who block your path. On top of board-removal, we also have "hand-removal": Vara's Choice is quite nice in both modes, really, but can be played proactively on turn 2 to really throw a wrench in the opponent's plans to break the rules. D'Angelo Arson is an insane blowout play against an opponent who is relying on their last few cards (okayish if they have more than 4, great if they're 3-4, insane if they're on 2) and also lets you hammer home the rulebook with some occasional burn.

It's a lot of interaction (more than I have units), but trust me - it's very nice to be facing against a clear board.

Next up in our lineup is a list of expendable incredibly useful minions who do some quite nice value generation.

First of all, Magnificent and Covetous strangers both fulfil the same role, and combo off each other to provide even more potency. Thanks to the opponent not having any units (because them having units is against the rules), these two buddies can provide a very nice advantage each turn in the form of extra cards and cheaper cards. It's generally more important to respond to a boardstate than to develop one of these, however.

Aurelian supplier is essential for her ability to supply you with additional goons. There are often very specific windows where you can play her to draw two cards, look out for them. She's not a stranger, but she fulfils the same crazy value so she earns her place. Buddied up in the 3-drop slot is Strange Gladiator, who has a voracious appetite for enemy relics. Were it a different meta, Strange Navigator would take a single Gladiator's position, but there's a lot of relics right now.

Makkar's and Grodov's Strangers round out the family: Makkaar's when you need more cards, Grodov's when you have too many cards and not enough power.

There's a singleton Grodov's Burden in there for when your opponent thinks of playing a Siege Breaker, just in case.

The biggest mantra I have when playing this deck is "I win the topdeck war" - there are practically 0 "bad cards" in the deck

Tips when playing against sling (because that's what everyone's annoyed with right now):

    • If they don't have a hand left, they can't play any units to trigger sling

    • If they transpose to stop hand hate, then their relics are very vulnerable

    • It takes a while to build up to their first sling activation; use that time to have already started the value train

    • A unit killed at fast speed in response to the end of their turn won't draw them a card

    • This deck can be very aggressive if it's given an opening (or one is made with hand hate)

    • Because they go down cards during set-up (playing sling, etc), Arson can be quite potent in shutting them down before they start slamming beefy units

    • General advice for any deck vs sling is that if you don't let them stick anything to the board, they can't actually build a lead with the card draw (or just aggro them down really fast)

    November Sealed League advice?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 12:35 PM PST

Lifelong MtG player, hopped on the Eternal bandwagon last month. I can drive decks pretty well, but am crap at building (although Eternal is somehow easier for me to see good synergy). First week in this month's league , I created a decent Stranger-Discard deck (https://eternalwarcry.com/decks/d/X3QHMHTYJfI/strange-discard), that took me to 6-4 and 2-2 tiebreakers.

However, with this week's packs, I'm not sure if I should implement the new influx of cards, change up my gameplan, what have you. (https://eternalwarcry.com/decks/d/5kupQwBiESY/november-sealed-league-pool)

Not even looking for specific card advice, any general advice would be appreciated! (Of course B.R.E.A.D. is a great starter for that)

    Hyper Aggro is in ‍♂️

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 10:57 PM PST

Sling is everywhere which has made me try to sling myself, but it wasn't my flavor of deck. That being said I went with SS for throne and Skycraggo for expedition. Both have some answers for Sling in the market with Slag, and more times than not your board will just be ahead.

Caution there are always removal piles in throne and a few strong control decks in expedition.

    Busted Legendaries in League

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 07:30 AM PST

Just ranting a bit, just went 7:0 into 7:3 in my first week of the current league, decent grindy deck, nice value units, but not much good removal, no relic interaction, not super fast closing power. All ten games felt like fair battles overall, except in the first seven I was able to get out on incremental advantages. And the last three rounds I also had a decent board control, but then got mauled by Shavka's Lute, then Touvon, then Pit of Lenekta. Cards, that completely win on their own. I really hate this, I don't like that League is so deeply influenced by opening lucky. Can't we have, like, legend-less, maybe even rareless league?

    Gauntlet boss variety improved recently?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 05:49 PM PST

Did anyone notice a recent increase in Gauntlet boss variety recently? My last three bosses were Nikki's Grab Bag, Kairos and Tavrod. I think I've seen each of them once over a hundred boss runs.

Ever since I started playing again at Argent Depths, Sibling Rivalry and Burn Scars have been the most common bosses followed by the more "broken" ones like Defender of the Spire, Company of Exiles, Sudden Death, etc. I don't remember seeing such variety last week over celebration week.

    Crack the Earth Question

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 05:24 PM PST

I might be crazy here, but I swear playing CTE in response to a relic weapon attack or killer attacked put the 1/1 in the place of the initial target, am I wrong? Have I made this memory up out of nowhere or did they change it and I not see the patch notes? Am I just thinking of ambush?

Is this how they always push the latest sets?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 07:26 PM PST

I get those Ascending cards but at least they were legendaries. It seems that they just throw in some gimmick cards and expect players to cave in until the dust settles. I do have the gold...but don't want to be forced into it.
