the idea of this series is that we take ai gauntlet decks and take them onto ladder to see if they stack up (they probably dont) in this first episode we take the feln nightfall decks called a night in the direwood to the ladder and play a best of 3 with each against the ladder

Haunted Highway in 2021? You'd be surprised

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 06:16 PM PDT

Those of you who played Eternal in the past will likely be aware of the old archetype of Haunted Highway, an FPS aggressive deck that abused Haunting Scream in order to deal a lot of damage through berserk and strong summon effects. This is a decklist inspired by that, but focused more on pulling off reanimation combos.

    DECKLIST HERE

Our main reanimation targets here are Makkar's Stranger and Jekk. Both have a very impressive ability to push the board state in your favour, and the ability to continuously reanimate them can ruin an opponent's plans very quickly. Against control decks and aggro decks, Jekk tends to perform the better of the two (his ability to burn opponents out for a lot is really noticeable, and you only need to discard a sigil the first time in order to give him double damage, against aggro being able to kill 2 units and leave behind a body is a huge tempo swing). Against Midrange decks, Makkar's stranger can be screamed out on T3 or 4 to kill a unit, steal a card AND push 4 damage, whilst also allowing the rest of your team to swing in.

There are two dominant discard outlets in this deck: Back-Alley Delinquent, who doubles as a way to conjure up some sabotages in order to pick apart a spell-heavy hand, along with Crafty Occultist, who helps dig through your deck in order to fill your hand with good spells and discard strangers to scream. Jotun Hurler is a great combo here as well in order to provide some card advantage.

The market is filled with cheap interaction spells - sabotage, open contract, and bore all help you shut down any attempts from your opponent to stabilise the board. Last Chance is amazing if you're able to redraw a previously-screamed unit, especially if you have a Dusk Raider on board to grant berserk. Wyatt's Junkyard does good work pulling out the last points of burn you need to win the game, whether that be from pulling back units from the void or the more direct burn spells.

Scream, Krull and Dark Return form our reanimation package, in order of importance. Scream is oftentimes the first reanimation spell you want to play on a unit; the ability to grant a unit permanent flying and charge makes later reanimation spells even more potent. Krull is often best at reviving a Jekk rather than Stranger, Jekk costing less and being able to discard Krull immediately for an activation is very helpful. Dark Return has the cost of needing you to play the unit again, however it does have one particular advantage: it allows you to force a unit to gain berserk. By either having a Dusk Raider stick to the board (or playing one that turn), you can dark return a target to force the inspire, which can be incredibly powerful on a scream target.

Overall, the deck feels really flexible in how + when you play your threats. That being said, this deck much prefers to be on the beatdown than to be the control. Feels like it has reasonable matchups vs Kira/Elysian thanks to having a great deal of cheap interaction, great ones against control lists thanks to hasty threats that have card advantage, and excellent matchups against combo thanks to plenty of hand disruption and agressive threats to close out the game. That being said, matchups against sling are probably fairly difficult depending on the draw.

I had great fun piloting this deck all the way to masters, and I hope anyone who tries it out will too!
