Shoutout to DWD for this preview event.

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 10:00 AM PST

This event was done so right. I'm very happy to see alot of people taking part or planning to take part in this event. Our team has showed great interest in this weekends event. The main reason I'm writing this post is to say great job, and as other events had people displeased with the rewards, they hit the nail on the head with the rewards this time around. In case any of you want some math on this, the rewards for a 7 win give you 6 packs (6k gold) , a diamond chest (2.5k gold) and a shiny rare (4 packs of dust/4k) all for 300 gems or 4k gold. Thats 12.5k gold for a 4k entry fee into a super fun event. Thank you so much once again DWD, you rock!

Making the Promo Work - Scrapfind Skimmer (Expedition)

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 12:25 PM PST

I had a very difficult time trying to find a place for Scrapfind Skimmer. Let's face it, this is not a good card. It's too expensive to fit in an Elysian Flyers deck, has trouble standing on its own as a unit even with Regen, and isn't a good enough tool for Reanimator decks to justify its cost. So after some soul-searching (and collaboration with Reddit folks) I was turned onto a deck that came completely out of left-field. There is one deck that is uniquely suited to get the clunky Skimmer out early enough to matter that also has a desire to fill the void: Unlock the Vault.

This deck is a modified version of an early Bastion Rising build that focused on Okessa Málaga and Unlock the Vault. That deck was only two factions, so I had to make some cuts to tune it for Primal at enough of a rate to justify having the Skimmer. There are also some tools in Primal that will help towards our goal of filling the void with scrap to cheat out, such as Master Conjurer and Forbidden Research, while Learned Herbalist, Ancestral Oasis, and Calibrate will help us ramp a little. Scrapfind Skimmer should be sending everything to the void, hopefully leaving a copy of Unlock the Vault on top to play the next turn.

Okessa Málaga in the market will help us cheat out relics when we can't find Unlock the Vault, or if it's been unhappily sent to the void with our other cards. Cirso, the Great Glutton helps us get out of unit-based jams, and Shatterglass Mage deals with troublesome relics. Grodov's Burden is pure gravy (and as a bonus, deals with Massive Greatsword).

New Promo event not new player friendly

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 12:12 PM PST

    Allo,

New player here, about three week in, played magic alot many moons ago, was on the HS train for a few years, picked up eternal and super enjoying it, breath of fresh air after the RNG auto-piloting HS!

Anyway, was looking forward to trying out the new event for the expansion, happy to support so chucked in for some gems. Was expecting some premade decks feature cards from the expansion or similar, end up getting steam rolled by three presumably diamond rank + throne decks dropping legends every other turn. Kinda whack.

Is this usual for prereleases? Its not got me very hyped for the expansion!

Anyway, still super enjoying the game, just seems liek a missstep where new players are concerned, but maybe its not aimed at peeps like me <shrug>

    kaelari's spoiler quiz answers

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 07:48 AM PST

If you missed the quiz and want to try before the spoilers below: http://solforgeladder.com/questions/

    Answers: http://solforgeladder.com/cgi-bin/tally.cgi?question=100

If you got stuck or are just curious what people tried all the answers are here. fair warning some people just can't express themselves without the use of shall we say colorful language. it wasn't too bad this time but there is some.
No one found the magic word, magic. this made me sad as i thought it a fairly easy magic word. I guess the hint was too subtle. will have to learn for next time if there is a next time.
There were two routes, one jumps you straight to the final question really fast but then you miss out on most of the fun...

Anyways if you have any thoughts/suggestions for next time let me know.

Making the Promo Work - I got nothin.

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 07:06 AM PST

I think the Scrapfind Skimmer has broken me. I've never had such rotten luck brewing a deck to make a promo work since I started making this column. Even Kaleb wasn't this difficult to find a home for. Reanimator has better tools, self-mill doesn't like it, and no other deck really needs a 4/4 regen flyer for 6 with such a huge downside. And nothing in Expedition wants to be anywhere around this thing.

Here's the list I've been tooling with. Maybe I'm going about this wrong. Maybe this just isn't my week to do a decklist. Maybe I should wait until Empire of Glass drops and try fiddling around with some new cards. Any tips?

    FORMAT:Throne 1 Permafrost (Set1 #193) 1 Annihilate (Set1 #269) 4 Back-Alley Delinquent (Set4 #200) 2 Malaise (Set7 #128) 4 Master Cartographer (Set5 #120) 4 Sporefolk (Set1 #262) 3 Strategize (Set3 #165) 3 Blight Pass Smuggler (Set6 #235) 3 Jennev Merchant (Set4 #169) 4 Honor of Claws (Set1005 #15) 1 Rindra, Infiltrator (Set9 #210) 4 Grasping at Shadows (Set1 #292) 1 Black-Sky Harbinger (Set1 #385) 1 Felrauk the Outcast (Set7 #205) 2 Icaria, First Reaper (Set1087 #11) 3 Scrapfind Skimmer (Set10 #339) 3 Uxu, Carnivorous Bloom (Set1097 #20) 3 Azindel, Revealed (Set1004 #21) 2 Vara, Fate-Touched (Set1 #307) 1 Primal Sigil (Set1 #187) 4 Cobalt Waystone (Set3 #151) 1 Primal Symbol (Set9 #109) 2 Shadow Sigil (Set1 #249) 4 Amethyst Waystone (Set3 #201) 2 Shadow Symbol (Set9 #145) 4 Crest of Cunning (Set3 #267) 4 Feln Banner (Set1 #417) 4 Seat of Cunning (Set0 #62) ---------------MARKET--------------- 1 Backlash (Set1 #200) 1 Hailstorm (Set1003 #11) 1 Burglarize (Set4 #224) 1 Stealth Strike (Set9 #135) 1 Near Perfect Imitation (Set1097 #8)

    Regen too Powerful in Draft?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 10:21 AM PST

Is the Regen mechanic too powerful in Limited? There already is a limitation on what removal you get when drafting, Regen seems to effectively shut out any Damage-Based Removal cards, especially spells. What Fire card can deal with a Regen unit? What Primal card? Those factions have to use at least two cards to stop a Regen unit, right, or am I missing something? Is the answer to Regen just to draft more Regen units? This seems like it could be a big problem.
