    10/21 Balance Changes

    Posted: 21 Oct 2019 09:56 AM PDT

    10/21 Balance Changes

We've been excited to see the development of the new Expedition metagame and look forward to seeing what players bring to next month's ECQ. While we're keeping an eye on what's emerging from the release of The Flame of Xulta, today's changes are aimed at the Throne format.

    Nerfs

    • Champion of Fury - Now 2/1 (was 2/2).

    • Snowcrust Yeti - Now 1/1 (was 2/1).

    • Garden of Omens - Now 5FFPP with 2 durability (was 5FP with 3 durability).

    • Vanquish - Now 3J (was 2J).

    • Defiance - Now kills attackers that cost 2 or less, stuns 3 or more (was kill 3 or less, stun 4 or more).

Champion of Fury and Snowcrust Yeti While we enjoy Yeti having their time in the spotlight, neither of these cards do much to create a Yeti-specific experience. They are powerful cards in absolute terms, not necessarily in conjunction with cards like Wump and Thudrock's Masterpiece. And since both Champion of Fury and Snowcrust Yeti are powerful in aggressive strategies, they tighten the range of Yeti decks competitive players can explore. We hope these changes give players incentives to try out different Yeti cards and play patterns while preserving what is fun and different about our furry friends.

Garden of Omens Our first promo site has been a hit. We like how it gives players a diverse mix of spells to help them fight against a variety of strategies. Nonetheless, its proven so popular we're taking a point of durability off and adding more influence requirements to ensure it doesn't overly crowd out competing options in multi-faction decks.

Vanquish and Defiance Both of these cards speak to answering specific types of threats--big units with Vanquish, and inexpensive attackers with Defiance. While poring through our data, we have found that many Justice decks play both, suggesting that they are not functioning as surgical responses to certain units, but rather as part of a too-ubiquitous experience of attempting to remove each opposing unit. We believe these changes move both cards closer to being things you consider in the context of cards that ebb and flow in and out of the metagame, rather than foundational parts of the experience.

    Buffs

    • Statuary Maiden - Now 2/3 (was 2/2).

    • Miris Nightshade - Now costs 4 to Ultimate and her Nyctophobia costs 4 (was 5).

    • Vara's Intervention Now gives -2 health (was -1 health).

Statuary Maiden Statuary Maiden provides a great countermeasure for unit recursion strategies and we're making her a little more resilient.

Vara's Intervention and Miris Nightshade We're buffing two cards for Unseen decks. Shadow Unseen strategies have never been a major player in Throne. These changes aim to give them another chance.

These changes should help expand the range of experiences available and open new creative opportunities in deck-building. As always, we'll be continuing to observe play patterns and trends both in ladder play and tournament competition.

First Time Masters... since joining the sub, been a long while since I was ranked here!

DWD: wants to nerf Ixtun unitless control. Also DWD: releases Edict of Shavka and doesn't nerf Royal Decree.

    Posted: 21 Oct 2019 05:50 PM PDT

So...something that puzzles me is this: while I welcome defiance not just dunking Chacha anymore (<3), something that puzzles me is this:

Why the phoque is royal decree as brutally efficient at hitting the units designed for checking unitless control? Namely, things like Jotun Feastcaller and Icaria? And if that wasn't enough, well, Edict of Shavka is the biggest "F U" ever to control-hosing units, such as CoCu, Icaria, and JFC.

Instead, the card that gets hit is vanquish, which was used much more frequently by justice aggro decks, that haven't really had a good showing since, well, the beginning of set 5?

    As Erik said:

"Before, the meta was Ixtun, yetis, and Jennev, with Ixtun slightly favored over Jennev. Now, Jennev is favored over Ixtun."

And I think that royal decree hitting units that cost 5+ is kind of a big contributor here.

I see the intention DWD had, but as usual, with the balance changes, while the intention might be good, the execution, as usual, leaves something to be desired.

I would be highly surprised if any justice 2-faction deck had a strong representation in throne past this point. Rakano getting vanquish nerfed hurts, AP hasn't been good in forever, Combrei hasn't had any real oomph since Sword of Unity, and Hooru got meteored back down to earth between privilege and palace nerfs.

    Oh, and maiden buff?

    Torch: new meta, who dis?

Regarding Leaderboard Ranking and Worlds 2020

    Posted: 21 Oct 2019 03:48 AM PDT

Why is it that with leaderboards mattering as much as they do with regards to qualifying for Worlds 2020 ( https://www.direwolfdigital.com/news/the-2020-eternal-world-championship/ ) and with QCPs determining qualification and even BYES for Round 1 of Quarterly Championships, that we still do not know what determines leaderboard placements? This is a post to urge DWD to be more transparent with regards to how leaderboards work since they have decided to make them matter in the qualification to Worlds.

    Scarlatch currently in Expedition

I just wanted to get my first win of the day and was matched against Scarlatch with a really clunky aurelian self-brewed deck. After a mulligan that lead to a mediocre hand, I already saw me loosing. But he got stuck on 3 power and made it possible for me to win :-D

    Thanks for the nice cardback.

    Please address MALICIOUS slowplay

    Posted: 21 Oct 2019 03:55 PM PDT

It is ridiculous that this is still allowed in the game, at least once a day some opponent starts with a Scoutland (0 power) and then.... stalls .... stalls ....

Depletes to 0.... stall .... stall

It is not fair play at all. In any real card game, the player would get a slow play penalty and be told to speed up. After repeat offenses, the penalties would get worse.

In Eternal? Report NAME? That is all we have, the option to report a players name. I m so offended by his name! Not the fact that he is dragging out this already won/lost game by 10 extra minutes. My only recourse is to slowplay him back to say 'I know what you are doing now stop' which doesn't work and doesn't feel good.

All this slowplay does is waste our time and cause us to tilt. It should be addressed already. Instead the timer goes off during actual gameplay but with intentional slowplay you can manipulate it enough to be fine for the game, and next game you are fine with no punishment.

Funky brew I'd like to take into ladder

    Posted: 21 Oct 2019 07:26 AM PDT

Praxis Mastery Dull name, I know.

The whole deck revolves around mastery and triggering it as fast as possible. It also functions as a "go wide" beat down in case the tricks fail. I made it even to keep cards in my hand with the golems. Half of my removal suite also returns guys to my hand for reuse.

Mastery helpers are Shugo Standard (causes all the masteries in the deck to trigger in one hit), Xenan Ritual and Oblisk. The goal is to get max mastery in one to two hits.

Optimal hand sees a turn three Tota Colony followed by a swing backed by Shugo Tactics to get a hand full of beef. It can snowball quickly if there are other mastery cards in hand.

The deck has a good enough showing in casual for me to feel guilty, so I'd like to take it to the next level.

Any help is of course greatly appreciated!

My Brew for Dangerous Research Event

    Posted: 21 Oct 2019 09:55 AM PDT

I have been playing this deck in the Dangerous Research event, and a couple of iterations later, it has been doing quite well. The main idea of the deck is playing Hero of the People (only one copy in the black market and 8 smugglers to fetch her), along with units with 3 battle skills. Opponents are definitely going to kill her if they can and then it can be brought back using Immortalize, Surgeon's Saw or Dread. Pretty straight forward.

This deck is entirely made of the cards I own. So there may be some new Flame of Xulta cards that can make it better, but aren't part of the deck because I don't have them. Any suggestion to improve the deck is welcome.

    Summon ordering question

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 11:33 PM PDT

Let's say you have 3 [[Dawnwalkwer]]s in the void, one being Xenan initiated for +1/+1.

You play [[Kairos, Grand Champion]] on an empty board that brings them back from the void (let's say you have enough influence).

What should happen? Get 5 cards or deal 13 damage (4+4+5) from Kairos?

Or maybe both (that'd be awesome) :)

    Bug?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 08:18 PM PDT

I have a quest for 5 primal victories. I have won two games now in the monthly league and they have not been applied to my quest. I just looked at my deck again to be sure and over one quarter of my deck is primal so I would assume that counts as a primal deck? What am I missing here? Thanks for any help.

What is more fun, Ranked or Expedition?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 02:33 PM PDT

Mostly being a Gauntlet player apart from my daily to get that free pack or finish off a quest or two, I wonder what to actually play when doing that.

I only play ranked at the moment, but all those sweeper decks are killing the fun for me there. Is expedition more open and fun? I have no clue what cards are valid though, which is a big downside. I will probably expect every opponent to hold a torch as usual. :)

I realize I still need to rank up in Ranked to get the end of season rewards, but when that is done should I invest the time to learn Expedition or is Ranked where the action is?
