Now live at ShiftStoned: a fan-built draft companion for Eternal Card Game

Now live at ShiftStoned: the fan-built Drafter, featuring evaluations by Jedi_EJ & his Eternal Journey Podcast co-hosts Johnholio and darth_herman2. The Drafter is your web-based card selection companion when picking and brewing for Eternal Card Game draft runs.

Just type a card name to get started, or browse our User's Guide for more information. For more on the development of the Drafter, check out our original announcement.

Please note that our release was scheduled before the current Eternal Draft Pack additions were announced: so the 56 newly added cards will remain unrated until the evaluators have a chance to analyze their impact on the format. You can learn more about the changes from this interactive gallery.

Meanwhile, you can help us to improve the Drafter by providing your feedback. Get in touch here on reddit or connect to the ShiftStoned Discord server to share your comments or lend a hand.

Eternal has to be the most fascinating combination of a generous game with a paywall I have seen in a while...

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 08:32 AM PST

    Hey guys,

Before you read this as a complaignt, I'm not even sure it is one. I also don't wanna step on the pride of any regular players. I kind of just wanted to share this weird observation from the perspective of an outsider but not a newbie.

Now let me lend some context to this.

After playing early in Eternals existance, stopping for the longest time, with the celebration I stuck my head back in and had a ton of fun playing. Over that time playing I also collected a little gold and now playing after the cards are locked again I noticed two things I find quite fascinating in combination:

    1. Eternal as a game in general is pretty generous. Don't make the mistake of falling bellow the gold limit to Draft but particularly if you enjoy limited you can get quit a bit of cards unlocked/dust collected for a very reasonable play time. Add to that the upgrading chests after games, Dust from each pack and as a CCG Eternal is quite reasonable to just play for free.
    2. But I also noticed after Eternal has a pretty hard paywall! So you collect a good ammount of dust and card packs and drafted cards and that should help you get into the cheap end of competetive things right? Nope! A good selection of the games best cards in Expedition (can't talk about Thrones because naturally I don't have a collection for Eternals Legacy Format but I assume it's the same just more hightened) are locked behind 'campaigns' that cost 25.000 gold, a fortune for a FTP player. Particularly give that I just mentioned that Draft is kind of your way to get new cards. So if you save for ages to buy 1 campaign... you can't draft anymore to get cards. Add to that, that you don't get chests or daily wins in Draft but you can't win Thrones/Expeditions because the key cards are in the campaign and your main way of getting gold is also kind of locked off until you get more gold. Making this a decently hard paywall!

And this combination really surprises me. I have seen greedy gated games with paywalls and microtransactions everywhere. I have seen games who frontload rewards and then shut off all sources to get you to buy. I have seen generous games that make paying money a convenience or support thing (like speeding up progress a but or buying cosmetics).

I have never before seen a generous game with a paywall though. Quite a unique combination!

Again no hate or even requests to change anything. Just wanted to share this obervation and wondered if others have made it as well :-)

    Scrubbed out, burned out...

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 10:23 AM PST

So, went 12-15 in the LCQ. Considering it was the throne format that I enjoy much more than exp, I feel like that's a huge sign that I'm burned out, for now at least. I didn't play a week before the LCQ either aside to qualify by half-assing it with even Severin. IMO, here are my thoughts:

    1) The Community Feels Too Tiny: not a lot of reddit/discord activity, hard to find people to discuss decks with often. For me, even playing "single player" games like Path of Exile and Eternal is more fun when there are friends to chat with/people to present to/etc. Furthermore, smaller community = fewer independent schools of deckbuilding = homogeneity in competitive play = more nerfs = less fun.

Solutions: attract people to reddit or discord with cool promo codes? Send out codes redeemable for a day through reddit/discord, and not just email, so as to create incentives for a bigger community. Additionally, more kitchen table challenge features. 45 card limited decks, expedition, and event formats (Company of Exiles, Heroic/Commander/Highlander, etc.)

    2) Hostility to Build-Arounds: for me, a lot of the fun and excitement of Eternal is cool build-around cards (machinations, sling of the chi, grasping at shadows, Endra, etc.). But what's the point when you either won't see your build around at the proper time (4/75), or can only run one copy of it (5+ merchants to get it from market)? Tier 1 decks don't need to be centered around a build-around to be tier 1, but in order to experience the competitive fun of a build-around, there should probably be a way of consistently seeing it. 3+1 was a wonderful solution that let people see unique cards with greater regularity, and I still miss it.

Solution: a lot of fun build-arounds are relics that cost 3 or less (arcanum hourglass, sling of the chi, sunset stone, etc.). Create a cheap, playable unit that can fetch these cards on curve. Rats will probably love it too, but hey, it's not a prolific deck, and it may mean more brewing possibilities. Display of Knowledge can tutor up any relic in existence and has 2 other modes--can we get a cheaper card focused on only drawing dirt-cheap relics?

    3) Balance issues--high miss ECQs, overnerfs, lack of meaningful buffs: Ruffian + Press-gang vs. Ubsat + Curtain Call. Release Sediti/Palace. Signposts nerfed into oblivion (HotV, Haunting Scream, etc.). Nerfs to good gameplay patterns (instigator, HotV) while letting high-variance feelsBads linger (SeveReapX2-errr, nvm, just got nerfed as I was writing this post, Golem -> Golem). All of these really drain the fun out of the game when it feels like DWD dictates what you are, or (more likely) aren't allowed to play, for reasons that seem absolutely arbitrary. Is it not wanting to watch control mirrors, such as what got channel nerfed from 8 to 9 (thanks Cranky and Erik)? Is it oversaturation of a reasonable card (Icaria, Instigator, HotV)? Is it an obnoxious to play against play pattern (echo makto, echo excavate)? Is it simply day 2 ECQ saturation? Who knows?

Solution: I'd love to see a QCP beta-test tourney after each new set and expansion release, just to test for any sort of overshoots so that worlds slots tourneys can have a better balanced field. Additionally, it'd reduce some of the burnout of constant prepping for yet another ECQ for people that want to take a break. New set released? Hey, take a breather, brew some fun stuff, or just put the game down for a couple of weeks through the overshoot beta testing tourney. Furthermore, and this is something Legends of Runeterra's doing--release some sort of data dump every so often (every two weeks?) to give people a more characteristic picture of the metagame. Maybe give a statement about what cards/play patterns are seen as problematic, and why. Additionally, Riot games has a balance framework as to when to buff or nerf a card. I'd love to see some objective metric of what it takes to get a card/deck nerfed at the least, and what qualifies for buffs.

    4) Constantly frenetic meta that DWD constantly flips on its head: stemming from the above: new set releases -> throne -> exp -> new expansion -> throne -> exp -> new set -> repeat. Coupled with the above overshoots on balance, it feels pretty awful to put time into building a deck/practicing it/seeing possible tourney results, just for DWD to come along and throw the meta into the air again. It's really, really exhausting for every new tourney to need to rebuild decks from the ground up, especially in throne, which is supposed to be a more stable format, but one that DWD keeps trying to shake up with balance changes.

Solution: please, please, PLEASE release the community tourney functionality already so that there can be more frequent, smaller scale tourneys so that people can get a better gauge of the meta, and so it feels less schizophrenic.

    5) Lack of strong factional signposts in many instances: again, beating on the "exploration is fun" themes. While great mono-faction cards are wonderful for setting up foundations upon which to build decks, the multifaction cards are what attract players to a particular faction pairing or its 3Fs. For instance, when Heart of the Vault was good, it held up Praxis, Jennev, FTJ, and Dark Heart (though that faction has since moved onto sacrifice). Haunting Scream at 2 created a lot of incentives to play something particularly Feln. Some of the champions, the 2XXXY cycle, the 4XXYYYY cycle, etc. Brewing is fun, and bad multifaction cards reduce incentive to brew.

    Solution: BUFFS!

So, yeah, that's all I have for now.

TL;DR: Eternal is a social game for me, and I don't have too many people to play with right now. I find brewing a lot of fun (even if I'm bad at it), and one of my favorite things to do is build around unique cards, which the game seems hostile to. Balance changes, even when done well, can come late, and overshoot on some cards, resulting in less metagame diversity, and schizophrenic/frenetic metagames.

As worlds is this month, and I'm not sure when ECQs are starting again, now is about as good a time to take a bit of a breather and come back refreshed later, but these are my thoughts as to why I'm burnt out for now.

Me & the gang heading back to the ladder now that we can’t play interesting decks anymore

This was a very long and good eternal year...

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 06:12 PM PST

After being a round away of qualifying for worlds, after 13 or 14 day 2, i feel like i learned a lot, i always played under pressure because i really wanted to qualify to get my revenge at that second place ive got last worlds. We played a lot and theory-crafted a lot with my friends and eternal team, we mostly tried to make unique and fun decks, and we all really wanted to win. After all our effort 2 of TRS members, lights and TheVoxer, got a place in worlds. Even if im a little sad i coudnt get that place on worlds after sacrificing a lot of my time in this game, im really grateful for this great game and i really hope we get a third competitive year. Thanks friends and Dwd, and cya in-game.

    Feln Control is back! (expedition)

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 07:55 AM PST

The addition of Blitrok and Withering Witch make Feln a bit more appealing especially Witch with the likes of Blightmoth to wreck havoc on your opponent's board. The deck is trying to blank annihilate as much as possible as well. The power is a bit wonky because we are playing 8 cylix to make sure we never run out of gas in the late game. The deck should have pretty good aggro and midrange matchups while suffering against heavy control and relic based strategies. Give it a go and let me know what you all think!

    Expedition - Blitrok, Deadly Listener

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:16 PM PST

This deck is built around a new addition to the Expedition format, one of my favorite cards to come out this year, Blitrok, Linrei's Listener. Pairing her up with Touch of Battle, she turns into a one-Listener wrecking crew. There are a handful of other cards in the deck that benefit from Touch of Battle, such as Crystallize and Torrent of Filth.

Just getting started and not sure what to do now that event is over.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 06:29 PM PST

I am a long time MTG player and loved playing Eternal during the event. I only like playing constructed but now that the event is over I am sitting at 7200 shift stone and bunch of cards that seem pretty useless when looking at the top tier decks. I could try to build a junk deck out of the cards I got but I do not want to have to slog through 20 matches to get my 3 wins for the day and not advancing my rank. I see packs for sale and some of the packages for sell but not a clear path on what to buy to jump in at a somewhat competitive level.

This post may come across as lazy for not wanting to put in the work to earn the cards but I know that if I have to jump into a competitive game handicapped not only in game knowledge but also card pool I am not going to play it for long.

Any one have any advice, or should I just look at other games?

    My cards are missing

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 04:47 PM PST

I bought into shadow, whispers of the throne, and shadow of the spire during the event where we play every card, after the event ended all of the cards from those sets except from into shadow are gone and the game still says that I purchased the expansions. I tried to email fire wolf and file a bug report on discord, I just either want my money or cards back

    Returning player looking for direction

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 06:26 PM PST

I played a lot about two+ years ago, but have since fallen out of practice. I think I last played seriously when Tavrod was ruining peoples days constantly. I'm looking to get back into the game, but at this point there's a lot to catch up on.

A first step would be to decide which campaigns to buy. I have enough gold for one, and it would be a good idea to buy the one with the most used cards in it to help with future shiftstone costs. But if there is a new campaign or card release around the corner, knowing that would also be good so I don't drop the shiftstone I currently have into something that will be obsolete in a week.

Another question I have is, what is the difference between Throne and Expedition? Is Throne an eternal Eternal format and Expedition like standard (comparing to MTG)?

Lastly, any big points for a returning player? Already started looking at decklists on eternal warcry, and excited to start working my way back into the game!
