    Eternal thoughts, feedback, and reflection

    Posted: 10 Oct 2021 05:30 AM PDT

So I've been around for a while, mostly tending to myself. I've spoken on occasions, but have often returned to the background. Right now, though… I feel like summing up my experiences with Eternal, particularly the recent ones. Before I start, I like Eternal. I really do… the management's good, being in the hands of MtG pros, the gameplay is some of the best I've seen out of card games, and there's still so many possibilities.

But we as a community need to be aware of mistakes; past, present, and future. Some critiques are misguided, but some do feel pretty spot-on, and Dire Wolf Digital definitely listens to its community. I have the utmost faith in that, only bolstered by the Q&A sessions. They're definitely very welcome.

I started playing the game in late Set 1, and Eternal's far different than what it used to be. But as the most recent Expedition format shows, the old guard is still plenty strong; Sandstorm Titan is a huge reason to be in a Time deck, and Banish, which was buffed a good while ago, still sees widespread success as a card. Is this good? Maybe. I personally like that Eternal doesn't power creep itself to the point where original cards just suck.

But there's points where something was struggling and too much was done to save the archetype. Strangers are the main example of this. The Set 2 strangers were largely seen as disappointing, and the original set could not keep up with the power being added in. Markets, Rizhan, the Listeners, and Sites… the pressure just kept rising for many archetypes. But then a line was cast in the form of Traver's Farm (which was a really good move), and then the set of Strangers from Echoes of Eternity. These Strangers… I think that was a mistake. It did so much for the archetype, that even now, EIGHT of the ten Strangers at Rare or Legendary see at least some use in Throne, a format known for its power. Gauntlet can still get me plenty angry with a Linrei's Stranger… and that isn't even the best one! I know I said to print lots of dragons, but I am still worried if they become too strong. I never want to hate dragons. They're friends.

I also want to go over the overall presentation of the game. It looks fine to the eyes, but there's not too much that pops out for people getting into the game. The closest thing early on is the Curiox totem. There are some nice visual and audio effects around, like the crunch during combat with big units, and the voicelines (PLEASE fix Lurking Brute's voiceline, they've been broken for months now). However, I feel like the visual department could use another overhaul, such as attack animations based on unit types, and more starting playmats to grant some variety. It might be a big reason, if not the largest one, that the playerbase for Eternal remained somewhat small, yet dedicated as it is. You could even just give some to the AI in order to tempt some people into supporting the cause with them. I wouldn't mind. I also wouldn't mind adjusting to all of that, if it means more people are retained from the tutorial.

I've also noticed that we're not getting many other events at all, recently. I get why they're not showing up much; the community wants to save their time and energy for the Opens. But making some more free ones or even rotating formats… I feel that the community would be far more interested in that. Free admission events are quite nice, and the barrier to access is really low. I personally enjoy that.

Lastly.. I want to talk about Exploit. I know, another person talking about that dang card. Don't wanna hear any more on it. But I feel my view into this is pretty unique, being detached as I am. Exploit's one of the cards that brings the hottest debates in all of Eternal. I'm actually in the rare middle ground regarding Exploit; while it is quite strong as a turn 2 play, it's not overpowered to the point that it commands games. Yet it's ubiquitous, being a staple for most Shadow lists. You could absolutely write an essay as to the play patterns that come from Exploit: the card is so difficult to achieve ideal play with. This requires knowledge as to the opponent's plan, along with your plan. Exploits often do take another Exploit, and this is for a few reasons… For one, people hate losing their stuff. Even back in the days of Sabotage and Avoid Death, people did not want to lose their key cards. Secondly, this move denies the opponent key information on your hand. They don't KNOW if they're stacked with threats or utterly struggling. And lastly, if there's enough non-power in the opposing hand, it messes with the curve in a major way.

Do I think Exploit is worth printing? Yes. Do I think Exploit needs a change? Yes. Does it need to lose Plunder? Heck no. The only change I think Exploit should get is having another Shadow influence in order to play it. That's it. This move achieves several things. I've noticed certain players in high esteem saying that Exploit would suck if it had another influence requirement, and others say this changes nothing. …and this is precisely where Exploit should be, in my opinion. Most importantly, this makes Exploit FAR more unreliable in 3 faction lists. You might see firsthand why this is such an issue today.

I had a lot to say, but this is a gathering of yet more thoughts that have been on my mind, and depositing them here seems like a good a place as any for the world to reflect and respond to these thoughts. I wish the best for Eternal and Dire Wolf Digital, and I see myself still playing it for a long while.

Back after a couple years, what's goin on?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2021 01:06 PM PDT

Trying out Eternal after two years or so away from the game, and I've got a couple questions.

    • Looks like they've split things into two formats, do more people play Expedition or Throne? Do they use different ladders?
    • What are some of the best decks in each format?

TIL Eternal Has a Bounty System

I played PChapin in a draft this evening. Had no idea who he was or what the symbol meant until after the match when I searched here.

I beat him because he only drew 2 power for what felt like 10 rounds.

Maybe now the shuffler will finally get fixed! /s (kinda)

All the constant post-tourney nerfs in throne format, ergo, lack of ownership, really make being a throne aficionado discouraging.

    Posted: 09 Oct 2021 04:14 PM PDT

Okay, so, right now, I'm just sort of chilling and not playing much Eternal, and here's why:

I'm a throne aficionado, but on a whole, it feels like throne is turning into another sort of "expedition" due to the ECQs. That is, while expedition gets new cards and draft pack changes, throne just gets...nerfs under the guise of "keeping the format fresh".

For me, "keeping the format fresh" feels much worse as opposed to a sense of ownership existing in the format. That is, to paraphrase a certain POTUS:

"If you like your [deck], you can keep it".

And these days, throne feels like it sort of breaks that promise of being the format with "all the historically most powerful cards in Eternal".

That is--I am of the opinion that throne should let decks flourish so long as their play patterns aren't degenerate (I.E. Feln dredge dumping several Felrauks/Eldings into play on turn 3), and that the balance changes (NERFS) aimed at throne have largely broken that promise.

    And here's how:

We've seen faction signpost cards (E.G. Felrauk, HotV, etc.) go from "being the incentive to play a faction" to "oops, unplayable", and with it, a huge chunk of the faction's presence.

More importantly, we've seen critical utility cards viciously gutted. Red Canyon smuggler is IMO the biggest victim of these (hey, want to lose the game for playing a smuggler? Play Rakano!), but Stonescar being strictly worse than shadow merchant, elysian being horrid outside of relic decks, etc. are all problems considering how vital markets are to the game. And is a 2/3 Rakano stranger that asks for a piece of interaction too OP for throne?

Furthermore, the balance between 3F and 2F decks is strongly out of tune with the cylix nerfs. Were they very strong? Yes. Were they so strong that a huge chunk of the strategic space needed to be thrown out of the window? No. Insignias + symbols + deep influence payoffs have blown open the power differential in power bases in this game, so this needs to be addressed quickly IMO.

Next: control players just sort of get dumped on no matter what they play. If you're on the life for cards plan, it seems like it doesn't matter if your plan is to gain card advantage with units (FJS, FTP, TJS, FTJ, sling, even Feln, Sylscar) or through traditional removal + draw (spellcrag, ixtun garden, temporal, Hooru sanctum, combrei relics), DWD seems to disapprove no matter how you go about this gameplan. Why?

Lastly, combo decks. I listened to the last QnA, and BasicMountain/PSulli said he viewed combo decks as synergy/engine decks (E.G. if you see a rat cage, you know what's going on). Well, those are token decks. But combo decks in the traditional sense of the word? Murdered on sight. Yes, engine token decks are neat, but...does that really scratch the itch of someone that liked to play the combo decks of yore in MtG? Yes, I know this game isn't MtG, but these types of archetypes scratch the itch of certain players. Why are they being pushed away with the ferocity they are?

    So yeah--a TL;DR:

Signposts, utility cards, 2F vs. 3F power (in every sense of the term) imbalance, control and combo players being persona non grata. This doesn't feel like a throne that lets everyone feel welcome or let people play with Eternal's most powerful cards in history.

DWD, please help this format keep its promises and make the game more fun for throne aficionados. Thanks ^_^

    Any news of new set?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2021 02:16 PM PDT

Hello, has DWD mentioned a new set during the Cold Hunt Open or on Discord or something?

I'm thinking of spending my shiftstone on some meme deck that probably isn't good - just wondering if new cards will be dropping soon and I should save
