    The future of EternalTournaments.com

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 01:41 PM PST

    Hey, Eternal friends!

As most of you know by now, kaelari was looking for someone to take over eternaltournaments.com. I immediately reached out to him to make sure the site could continue to live on. Over the past month, in addition to moving cross-country, I have spent a bunch of time setting up a server that can be used to run the site and completed it today.

For the immediate future, it will be business-as-usual for the site. However, I'd like to get feedback on what you expect from the site. I have some real-life things going on and new features / look-and-feel takes time, but I'm committed to make eternaltournaments.com something that every tournament player and admin can enjoy.

If you have any ideas or requests, please comment here and I'll keep track of them.

I'm really looking forward to working with the Eternal community and Dire Wolf Digital to have a great community tournament site.

P.S. Big thanks to kaelari for running eternaltournaments.com for so long!

    Considering returning..

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 05:13 AM PST

I stopped playing back when fall of argenport dropped. I've been out of the loop for over a year and was considering coming back to the game but....

Checking steamcharts showed that the game has half as many players as it did before (on steam), although that might not be completely true since it is now playable on switch. I was also looking for articles and stuff about latest updates/content and it seems that most of the content coverage has been absent since August at the latest..

I saw that balance changes are still happening, that's at least one good sign. How is the game state and matchmaking times? Are people still playing? Is it worth downloading again or is the game dying?

Are you more likely to get Legendaries you already have?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 09:37 AM PST

I have noticed that I often get legendaries that I already have copies of rather than new ones, when I open packs. Are the legendaries already in your collection more heavily weighted than those that aren't, or is it just a coincidence?

If not I think it's a pretty cool idea because it helps f2p players (like me) build more consistent decks.

DWD: "We feel this card was played too much, so we're nerfing it." Players: was there even an alternative at that cost anywhere else?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 01:01 PM PST

So, this is a problem I've seen in Eternal and DWD's balancing, honestly...since set 1.

    Here's the very simple issue:

You want to have some unique effect. Maybe a finisher in aggro like a 5-cost charger (like Soulfire Drake, when it cost 5 :( ). Maybe you want a control finisher (like Icaria or HotV). Maybe you just want a good fatty to slam at 5-6 that either provides value or is resilient to removal. Maybe you want a couple of pieces of fast interaction to get you through the first few turns of the game (like torch at fast...RIP) so you can get to your lategame wincons.

Throughout much of Eternal's history, the choices were basically "this one card, or nothing".

That is, for the longest time, you didn't have a single substitute for soulfire drake until Ghodan and Eclipse Dragon came along, so that got banned way back when. For 7 SETS STRAIGHT, there was no 1F substitute for torch for decks that didn't put much value on its ability to go face. For instance, consider the following torch-complement/substitute effects:

1F fast--deal 3 damage to a unit or kill an enemy attachment.
1F fast--deal 3 damage to a unit or site, scout.
1F fast--deal 3 damage to an attacking unit. Amplify 3.
1F fast--deal 4 damage to an enemy player. Scout.

Note that none of them are strictly better than torch. If you want the flexibility of taking out a unit, no questions asked, or pointing that piece of dead interaction at the opponent's dome, you still just wanted to play torch. However, if you know you're the control deck in a matchup and don't value its face damage, you could make that tradeoff in flexibility for other benefits, such as being able to hit sites, kill attachments, or so on. Or, on the other end of the spectrum, if you're the aggressor, you have a card that basically only goes face, but gives you 1 damage and a scout for the tradeoff in flexibility.

However, do we have these cards? No, we have garbage like char, signal flare, and conflagrate, that are limited draft chaff at best, which don't come close to seeing a whiff of constructed (throne, anyway) play, simply because they don't address the problems in the format, which is on the one hand, must-answer cheap units (warleader, teacher, unseen commando, Hojan, etc.), and on the other hand--decks constructed specifically to blank all the tempo-efficient interaction an aggro or aggressive midrange deck plays, and then value-bomb you out of the game, whether it's with Heart, Icaria, Arcanum, Svetya's Sanctum, or whatever ham sandwich, as LightsOutAce calls them, happens to be lying around.

And then of course, DWD says that "torch was present in 51% of decks". Well, if your only source of protein was chicken, wouldn't you call someone silly if they complained that you ate chicken too much?

Or, for a more interesting example, consider big Icaria. First, she was nerfed for being the only finisher in town. She goes on vacation and several control decks crush people without her and get nerf-hammered. Comes back, spikes worlds, finds another deck, and then "LUL HotV only game in town! NERFED!"

It's like...hello? Haven't we watched this movie before?

How about instead of nerfing the only option, how about we get more options?

As a long-term player, the game feels frustratingly unstable now with these sudden sweeping balance changes

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 05:08 PM PST

Seriously. I have loved this game for over four years at this point, I have a pretty huge collection, and I've shelled out at least a couple hundred dollars in support of the wonderful developers. But this is the second or third time in the last 6 months I have logged on and been slapped with nerfs and buffs that don't just balance the game, they change it on a fundamental level. A while ago it was the patch which nerfed Moonstone Vanguard, Vara, Statuary Maiden, and Darya while unnerfing Icaria. Then there was the patch that nerfed Vanquish and a few other cards like Champion of Fury. Now Torch is suddenly gone as we know it, Slumbering Stone is nerfed substantially, and Heart of the Vault has left the usable 6-drop spot? I have had 5 decks dropped tiers or killed by these changes in as many months. (Two Masters Praxis lists, a Masters Stonescar deck in increments, a homebrew Masters JPF deck, and an only-decent but much-loved Sentinels deck.)

It's not that I think these changes are bad in and of themselves. In a vacuum they're actually mostly reasonable, but it still creates this feeling of tension I really dislike, knowing the cards I've played with for years could be taken away at any time. What's next - Harsh Rule? Sandstorm Titan? Permafrost? I used to play Magic and eventually left it for this game, but man, I would have left much sooner if the Magic devs were breaking into my house and stealing random cards from my decks every time the season changed. And I know, digital is different from paper - still...

I don't mean to only complain, although I don't think I'm being dramatic. What would I prefer the devs do instead? At the bare minimum, some level of forecasting so I'll at least know a week or two in advance when my decks are about to get fucked. Preferably, an increased focus and promotion of non-Throne formats, maybe even a more traditional rotating recent sets format - that would allow a place for the devs to implement their massive meta changes in a calm, controlled way.

tl;dr Please stop breaking into my house and stealing random cards from my decks while I'm at work.

    What deck's still function?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 08:46 AM PST

I'm not a great deck builder but I can't even beat gauntlet anymore with these nerfs. I can't even clear my quest log because what I had was so reliant on the cards that got destroyed.

I'm desperate for anything that can at least be competitive enough that I can clear my quests.

    so, now torch is slow

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 08:03 AM PST

any chance we can get a snapcaster-lite card?

probably doesn't need ambush but could still be cool to see :D

    3 FPS

    Barry, Grasper of Secrets.

    gunslinger mage

when {cardName} enters play, you may discard a card if you do return a spell from your void to your hand and it gets Voidbound.

    Voidbound.

    2/3

does seem a bit busted as an enabler for reanimator, but im sure there are loads of different ways you could basically put the effect, make it entomb like the 3/1 what draws a torch or make you have to pay X and do the spell right away.

    Stonescar dragon help

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 05:33 PM PST

I am dire need to know how this deck is performing before I spend the stone on it. It seems really cool but not sure how to build it. I'm not great at deck building to begin with. I mainly am wondering what lists people are running with, how viable it is in expedition and throne, what success has been found. Thanks all!

5 legendaries from 8 league packs. All pretty much useless! (With the other cards I have etc.)
