Doc's Laboratory | Lab Report: Xenan Mandrakes in Expedition

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 10:10 AM PST

For this week's piece, I wrote a deck-tech featuring one of the hottest decks in Expedition: Xenan Mandrakes! As with my last Lab Report, if you're looking for a strong deck to bring to the TNE event this Friday, I'd highly recommend giving this deck a shot. Hope you all enjoy : )

    Expedition: Amplified Soldiers

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 01:46 PM PST

    Decklist

An old mechanic getting new cards AND Tribal support? Count me in! This deck tries to bury your opponents under a flood of recruits, streaming from their Bastion Garrison and led to battle by an Asro Scout.

Market is a bit wonky, and I am still considering to craft Onoris Roa. Not sure yet.

Making the Promo Work... Kinda - Talir, Timejumper

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 12:57 PM PST

Talir, Timejumper (represented in this decklist by Talir, Timeless) is an oddball. It feels prenerfed, like last week's promo. It has a unique defensive ability, but its high cost make it absolutely moot in most matchups. So this week's deck is a little bit of a mixed bag. Based on JTJag's (Rank 6 Masters) Rolant's Threesome from half a year ago, I present to you: Rolant's Harem.

The beef of this deck is based around four hero cards: Rolant, Iron Tyrant, Diana, Faith's Shield, Maeve, Walker of Aeons, and Talir, Timejumper. Each hero has a unique skill that works towards an end-game beatdown. Rolant fills the board with valkyries, and is an imposing defender; Diana is evasive, gives you armor and a bonus card; Maeve refreshes your deck with beefier units and weapons; and Talir, with her charge and spell-immunity, provides the knockout punch at the end.

The Hidden Potential of Empire of Glass

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 03:14 PM PST

In my previous post, I talked briefly about why I was excited for Empire of Glass, but I guess I should have reserved some excitement for after the set launched. Empire of Glass is possibly the best expansion that Eternal has ever had, as there are so many new opportunities for deckbuilding thanks to not only a large pool of cards, but also a set of cards that interacts with old cards in ways we haven't really seen before.

There's a lot of obvious potential among the new cards (specifically among the new tribes) and a lot of less obvious potential. I'd like to talk about some stuff I theorycrafted might be interesting to look into.

Keep in mind that this won't be entire decks, just pieces that can justify a larger range of decks with ideas on how they might be built. Also keep in mind that even with what others have been talking about and what I suggest here, this will still not account for the full potential of what you can do with this set. I'll try not to talk about what other people have done already and instead talk about stuff I think could be interesting that people haven't tried yet. Finally, this will also include old cards that might have relevance with this new set, which is particularly noteworthy with the soldier type heavily supported this set.

With those points out of the way, here is my list:

    Blow the Dam:

Probably the most interesting card I've seen that people aren't talking about, which is understandable when compared to other amplify cards. Empire of Glass has several cards that add cards into the market, the most interesting being those that share Dam's factions: Scrapmetal Fury, Siege Supplier, Hoarding Builder, and Xumuc Coercion. Add one card from each, and you'll be able to amplify Blow the Dam for 22 lifesteal damage. It goes even further with additional copies, void recursion, and/or the market provisions from other colors. Of course there are obvious drawbacks, such as counterspells, face aegis, and possibly market access, but there are tons of possibilities to alleviate these concerns.

With Scrapmetal Fury being a Grenadin, you can play a Scrappy Hour list with market Blow the Dam as a finisher in just Stonescar. In FPS, you get Realign the Stars to tutor your win condition and both Invasive Species and Vicious Overgrowth as additional market addition tools. In FTS, you get some of the better market addition tools alongside the ability to ramp out your combo with Display of Destruction. In FJS, you get double Cylix. There are a lot of possibilities, so if you have Blow the Dam then go crazy.

    Second Sight

This might be a premium support card this set, as fate was brought back while Valkyrie-Warp was introduced, and Second Sight works well with both.

Valkyrie-Warp has a problem where drawing the card prevents you from being able to use its V-Warp effect, and many cards have a good chunk of power tied behind that effect. As a result, there will likely be some demand for a way to put V-Warp cards on top of your deck, and Second Sight is capable of doing just that. Valkyries are not in primal, but you might just splash primal for Second Sight in your valkyrie deck to trigger your Valkyrie-Warp effects more consistently. If you want time instead, Excavate and Meditate do similar things.

Fate is a different story, as not only are their fate effects in every color but primal has a larger number of fate effects than other factions due to it being a pushed mechanic in early sets. However, the most interesting cards are the new draw-oriented fate cards. The downside of Second Sight is that you "lose" a draw, so you end up having to wait for the next card in your deck a bit longer than you should, but with these new "fate: draw a card if you have an x" cards you don't lose anything. The most interesting one is Gatecrash Trooper, as even though the effect is symmetrical there are no conditions on having units on the field. This only fits in a combo deck, but it might give combo decks the consistency they need to perform.

    Fair Exchange

There was tons of talk about what to do with this card when it was first revealed, and I figured I'd talk about it more since we have new cards that play well with it. Use it with West-Wind Herald, Iceberg Scattershot, and (if you need to) Near-Perfect Imitation for an infinite combo, use it with bond or the recently released Clear the Way or Align the Tesseract to ramp out a big threat. You could already do some of these things with Reweave, but having access to the card at fast speed and not having to wait for the card to shift gives it a massive bump.

Armor gain with Plea for Aid

Plea for Aid is an interesting tutor with lots of potential, as it not only tutors and plays the unit but has a cost in armor that can be built around. Most notable are Reinforce as fast armor gain and the free armor gain of Armorsmith, Emerald Waystone, and Chancellor's Horn

    Tribe combining

The tribal synergies are a big part of this set, and I won't take too long on these, but there are two cases with the tribes that I think could be overlooked by many people.

The first is taking two tribes and smushing them together into a single deck. This is a bad idea without cards that bridge between the two, and we have a few within the set, like Arach and Metalfang for Grenadin, Blightpetal for Grenadin Mandrake, Roving Workshop for Valkyrie Sentinel, and Glen Scout for Soldier Mandrake. However, it goes deeper when you look at previous sets. There are tons of support for Soldier Valkyrie and some support for Soldier Sentinels, and that might be worth looking into.

The other thing to look at is how many soldiers we have from previous sets. It almost seems like you can take any tribe and make soldier-other tribal work. Also, Veteran Mercenary is a soldier, so you can go mono-colored soldiers in time, justice, or primal, which is neat.

    Shadowfang Valkyrie and Unexpected Arrival

0-cost cards and cost reductions are extremely risky pieces of design because of the potential abuse they provide. Shadowfang Valkyrie being a 0-cost aggressive unit you can play on turn 1 has legitimate potential to allow decks to win games by turns 3-4, before Harsh Rule comes on line, while Unexpected Arrival being a combat trick, a handbuff tool, and a cost reduction for 3 cards means there's lot of potential abuse while also mitigating the weakness of most handbuff cards.

    Overmax Wand

I don't know how, but there's probably some way to go infinite with this. Some early ideas include West-Wind Herald with Cabal Spymaster and Kaspar with Makeshift Barrier.

    Wildgrowth Druid and transform synergies

This card was introduced just last set as one of Elysian's big pushed mechanics (the other being imbue), and Empire of Glass added more support for it with both new transform effects and new synegies like Shambling Sapsucker and the previously mentioned Overmax Wand. There might be some potential here.

    Conclusion

There's a lot of potential this set, and as I said before this isn't even the full list of potential of what we can do. What cards do you think have a lot of potential within the cards released this set? Anything you are particularly excited for that you haven't seen?

    Casual wins?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 03:22 PM PST

Is there a limit to the amount of chests I can get from casual wins a day? And is there a hidden mmr that matches me against people based on win loss or cards in collection ?
