    Crafty Occultist Theorycrafting and Decklists!

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 01:29 AM PDT

So Crafty Occultist was spoiled recently and I think it's an amazing addition to any Skycrag Deck.

    I will now elaborate.

One long-standing way to gain card advantage in Primal has been abusing Jotun Hurler (and on the odd occasion, Xo of the endless Hoard). Jotun Hurler draws you a snowball whenever he's drawn, which essentially gives you 2 opportunities to discard a card for the price of only drawing 1! Sometimes you even get to use the snowball to gain value somehow (popping an Aegis, killing a 1 health unit, etc). Many decks use a mix of merchants, Strategise, and Honour of Claws in order to "crack" the Hurler into fresh cards.

The issue with these options is that they have a tendency to not affect the board state much - merchants are the only unit that is typically used in this role, and they're inherently substandard because of their capabilities. Sure, this is often perfectly fine in control decks, but midrange decks (and maybe even aggro decks) have real issues with the tempo loss said spells entail. This is what Crafty Occultist solves. If you have a Jotun Hurler or Xo of the Endless Horde in your hand, Crafty Occultist discards 2 bad cards (Likely Xo + Treasure Trove, or Hurler + your worst spell) to create a 3/3 flier, a 1/1 grenadin, and draw 2 cards - which is quite impressive. Even in bad-case scenarios, Crafty Occultist filters out your hand and digs for the cards that will help swing the match in your favour, often achieving at least one of the modes.

That's not even accounting for the other aspect of Crafty Occultist - the ability for them to act as a 3 cost 3/3 that reads "draw 2", which is very powerful. If you're unable to discard 2 cards to them, there's no wording that suggests you'll miss out on the card draw. To my knowledge this hasn't been confirmed by DWD, but I'm fairly confident this is how it'll be. Said issue then becomes "how do I achieve this empty-hand state?" and I think the answer is on the tip of more than a few people's tongues: Aggro. Skycrag Aggor (or Skycraggro) is an archetype that has been around a long time, in recent times it's been Yetis in throne, but there have been variations over the years. I'm fairly sure that Crafty Occultist has the potential to be put into the Yeti shell; in the past Yetis have incorporated cards like Milos, Rebel Bomber into their lists, and this could be a possible inclusion as well.

Working on this, here are two decklists I've put together that utilise Crafty Occultist in neat ways, that I think might be relevant or at least worth tuning once Stormbreak actually releases.

Deck 1: Haunted Highway (Occultist Edition)

Haunted Highway has been a long-dormant archetype that centers around using Haunting Scream in order to pull units with strong summon effects (and/or attack/infiltrate) in order to beat-down the opponent. Haunting Scream and Vicious Highwayman both got nerfed and the deck fell quickly afterwards. Over time, people have looked to revitalise the archetype as new cards are released (one example being Jekk, Mercenary Hunter), and I'm doing the same right now. Probably needs a great deal of tuning, but with new ways to gain card advantage and shoot down anyone who gets in your way, Stormbreak might just put the Rogueish Road back on the map again!

    Deck 2: Jarral Skycrag

If you've spent a while laddering or watched any tournaments in the past months, you'll know that Jarral is quite good. Elysian Jarral and Feln Jarral have both had quite a bit of exploration recently in Throne lists, and have granted Jarral himself some very earned notoriety. Jarral does two very nice things if you're able to devote yourself to Primal - card advantage and a way to burn your opponent out late-game. Skycrag Jarral is sort of the "hipster" Jarral - experimented with by the people who didn't want to be seen piloting mainstream decks like Elysian spells (though if you want to go full hipster, Hooru Jarral is waiting for you) to a medium amount of success. Skycrag gets a few neat tools that other Jarral variants don't have access to: Torch and Kenna, Uncontained as autoincludes, along with cards like Garden of Omens and Pyrotech Explosion as additional options. Despite these options, Skycrag found it hard to compete with the ability to play Wump and Mizo, Master Conjurer, or Felrauk. With Crafty Occultist, Skycrag may well have enough tools to compete. Both Hurler and Xo synergise with both Jarral and Occultist, as even though they are discarded with Jarral, their fate effects still occur and you get to create your snowball/trove.

Overall, I'm really looking forward to what Stormbreak might bring to the meta, and I reckon both Throne and Expedition will be hit with a nice breath of fresh meta!

Im kinda lost on which campaign to buy?

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 06:57 AM PDT

Im nearing 25k Gold and I know I want to buy a campaign with it. I already have the first 4 (The end and the beginning, The empty throne, Jekks bounty and Into shadows). Do you have a suggestion on which one to buy? Which one will give me the best cards? Its quite a selection by now.
