Posted: 03 Sep 2021 07:30 AM PDT BUFFS: Voprex's choice: Reactive J decks should probably be playing at least one knife in market, and potentially deepforged plate, which makes this card a little more interesting in FJS decks IMO. Eilyn's choice: has mostly been powercrept by dazzle unless you really expect to tag a fatso with this. Potential application as an additional copy of dazzle in the market? Jadehorn: meh. Almost completely irrelevant. Slay: deathstrike and desecrate be like "hi, DWD?" Potentially a reasonable inclusion in a more reactive FJS shell now? Still, the big thing about fast spells is the ability to fork them with card draw if the opponent doesn't play anything worth killing, and AP+x doesn't really do that all that well early on. So...maybe? Yeti Furflinger: you're not cutting wump, site, or mask maker for this card in yetis. Potential inclusion in Feln nightfall decks, if anyone ever wants to play them again. Don't think this card will be relevant until we see more relevant nightfall payoffs. Edict of Grodov: maybe not embarrassing in T markets anymore to deal with Rost or various shadow decks? Went from utterly unplayable to...market bait? Vodakhan's Staff: crownwatch paladin and chainwhip bludgeoner like this a lot more. Being able to put a 3/3 weapon on your 2/2 aegis dork and then have a 5/5 back to block crackback vs. aggro is no joke. That said, I'm not sure what the particular draw to Combrei aggro is these days. The deck is...okay, and that's as much as can be said for it I think. Cirso's choice: maybe there's a world in which ely markets this instead of lightning storm for the flexibility of the lifegain + aegis? I don't think paying 1 extra to make lightning storm fast makes this maindeckable. Kehanya: survives Kenna and sigil Jekk now. Kira and Ely are still around, but I doubt Ely wants her maindeck. Big meh in throne, maybe in expedition? Braun: 5-drop do-nothing is still a 5-drop do-nothing. But now he survives ice bolt or brawling with Rost. I guess that's something? Gentle Grazer: I...guess...this is something? Potential use in Praxis ambushing out that 4/4 giant or an ixtun merch? Carnosaur: a 6/6/6 that has to exhaust to affect board just isn't what it used to be in throne. Nostalgia can be a hell of a drug, but so is 6 power for something that doesn't have the impact of Palace. Talir's choice: so the choice between a glorified rally or a glorified grenadin drone with ambush costs 4? Eh? Pass. Vicious Highwayman: now we're talking. X/1 aggro put on notice. A hard-hitting charger that swings the game vs. aggro decks or pressures slower decks is no joke. NERFS: Blazing Salvo: so, back to a reactive card again? 2 power is too much for aggro decks, but a removal and market access for reactive decks, and now highly efficient market access for golem decks? Wuh oh. Did Worthy Cause not teach DWD anything? Nerfing cards from 1 to 2 trips the golem alarm, and market access for golem decks = please no. I hate golem, so, not particularly happy with this change. Houndmaster: every deck that played this card will still play it, it's still fantastic, move along. Amaruq: also a long time coming. This card snowballed hilariously quickly. Now it's more in line with a 2-drop, and is still a very good card. Every deck that ran it will still run it, no mourning this one. Hooru Smuggler: offensive aegis + free faegis unit is still an offensive aegis + free faegis unit. This basically only changes when you want to play it without its onslaught. I think there'll be a few times vs. you feel the nerf with this card against various aggro decks or when autotread is involved, but I think it's not that big a deal because this unit comes with aegis so often, and free faegis is huge for Kira decks. Genetor Dovid: looks like the janitor got cleaned up. I'll be happy torching and hailstorming his ass if I ever see him again. I think this is an effective ban on the card for throne, to which I say "good riddance". Hooru Kira played him far too often just as "oops, 4/4 for 2, LMAO". Good to know that the downside will now be meaningful, and good riddance to eyeroll-worthy rubbish. Transpose: basically got the banhammer unless even decks want a 4-cost market for whatever reason (play salvo, lmao). Heavy primal decks still have eilyn's favor, cobalt waystone, and their choice of dazzle/flicker to protect themselves, while Jennev merchant is probably the single best one in the game as far as reactive decks go (?). The big loser here is Feln AAC that basically has to play like a primal deck without faegis just b/c of its wincon. In any case, I don't like bans in a digital card game, which is what this is. That said, the part that irritates me is that any nerf to faegis is a buff to equalize, which I think has one of the worst play patterns ever. Ramp up -> dump hand -> crack relics -> LMAO. Ugh. Aymar: nobody liked that stupid warp combo deck that took 15 minutes to play out for a non-deterministic win. Nobody likes playing against eggs. Not going to miss this card at all. Sling: Boxer says the 3 -> 4 nerf makes the current existing archetype dead. I'm not so sure, considering how obscene the card advantage sling provides is. I really hope even sling doesn't suddenly become a thing, because that would be obscenely irritating to have running around in the meta. Shrine to Carver: card was ridiculous for the longest time. The less shrine we see, the better. Another one of those cards that are just not pleasant to play against, ever. Garden: oof, that's a chunky nerf. Being able to ice bolt an aegis unit is cool, but at the cost of losing 0-cost defiance/torch, and 1-cost (potentially 0-cost if Tamarys popped) treasure troves? Yeaaahhhh, that's rough. I'm not sure why this card needed yet another nerf considering how rare garden control is these days, but, well, there you go. Davia: guess someone ran into Spiffiriffic's Keelo deck? In all seriousness, this and D'angolo's might seem to be expedition-targeted, but last I checked, Xenan midrange was everywhere, and now will be even more everywhere. So...not sure why this was necessary. D'angolo's might: purely expedition focused. I thought this might have had a place in throne, but shadow midrange is junk at the moment, and so is shadow in general as far as throne goes. 1-for-1 removal or exploit you a couple of times and then...have absolutely nothing going the rest of the game. Seems shadow in throne is either absolutely batshit insane with its void shenanigans, or utterly worthless. And right now, it's not doing a lot of void shenanigans. Krull: welp, no more krull smuggle juggle into shrine on 6 loop. I haven't seen a krull deck in a long while, so...not sure this was necessary at all considering the sorry state of shadow decks in throne. Talir: RIP Vodakhan/Kairos/Azindel shenanigans. Not sure why this was necessary either. I guess we're on the twinbrood train if we want Talir shenanigans now? Again, another nerf that felt unnecessary, but c'est la vie. Overall: the nerfs went after current decks hard, but the buffs didn't really bring much back. I really would have liked to see DWD be a bit more adventurous with reverting (at least in some capacities) cards that are effectively banned. Bulletshaper (2/3 for 2 was fine), Rakano smuggler (2/2 would be reasonable given salvo nerf), AP smuggler (2/3 would be worth trying), ely smuggler (2/3 with +2/+1?), 0/4 Auralian (T midrange feels anemic in throne), baby Ironthorn (Rakano influence didn't need to be banned), Ijin (was fine playing armor on herself), backbreaker (exp nerf that could use a revert), AP instigator (2SS for a 3/3), Darkblade cutpurse (would have reverted to 1/2), desecrate (revert), Heart of the Vault (6/6/6), Sicaria (5/4 for 6? She's been completely gone since her nerf), Felrauk/Elding (would have reduced pay 2 to pay 1), and Soulfire Drake (Deheen has been a complete nothingburger in throne) all seemed like reasonable choices IMO. Not too thrilled about golem decks getting efficient market access (for a golem deck, anyway) or even sling potentially being a thing. Lamenting that the buffs/reverts didn't go harder.
