    Stormbreak Expedition Open in Retrospect

    Posted: 20 Apr 2021 10:20 PM PDT

So, the Stormbreak Expedition Open was a wild one, huh? A lot of Menace, a buch of Sling, and a whole fistful of other decks that found cracks to slip into.

Take a ride with me as I go through some of the key players in the most recent Expedition tournament Right Here!

Replace Expedition with a new player format.

This is simply something the game really needs, A new player friendly format.

I've been here 4 years now so don't think I ask for this for myself. The lifeblood(good name for a spell) of any game is getting and keeping new players. Expedition is NOT that format.

Why? Expedition favors whoever can collect the latest sets or buy the newest campaigns faster. This means Veterans always have an advantage as it's far easier for them to purchase them with cash or gold.

Before I hear the backlash, I fully acknowledge the ideas I'm about to type up are borrowed from other games. If you have a better idea, then please add it to the discussion.

First, let's borrow from MTG Duels, the last one they swore would be around forever...which means 2 years in their terminology.

In decks for this format allow:

    1 of a legend

    2 of a Rare and 2 of a Promo

    3 of an uncommon

    4 of a common.

These are cards a new player can easily get enough of without breaking open the piggy bank. However, the limits posed make a veteran wonder why he/she should even bother.

Second, there should be zero ranking down except at end of month. No up 15, down 15 or similar. Wins net 10 points, losing is 0 points. Perhaps 2 rank points added per higher level you beat, Idk.

Third, Perhaps a common card can be given just for participating in a match. You can't simply concede of course to gain this card. The common card can be changed every day so you'd have to play at least 4 of this format to get all 4 of it.

Fourth, and this is the big PERHAPS so It's nowhere set in stone of a idea. PERHAPS we could try doing away with Power. I got this from MTG Tactics.

    Turn 1, gain 1 power

    Turn 2, gain another

    Turn 3, gain another

    Turn 4, nothing

    Turn 5, gain a power

    Turn 6, nothing

Turn 7 gain a power. and so on

Trust me, there were problems with Tactics but this wasn't one of them. What power you gain would be determined by the % of the deck the color is. Also, cards that ramp or give influence would simply add to the total as they do now. If your deck is 70 red/30 blue, 70% of the time your given power would be red and 30% blue.

Does anyone else feel like exploit ruined the game?

    This card was a mistake.

Returning player wanting to start new.

    Posted: 20 Apr 2021 04:52 PM PDT

So I played this game several years ago, during a dead period for other card games I was playing. I did a lot of the basic beginner stuff, did most of the puzzles, most of the story, didn't play much ranked. I'd like to take the game more seriously this time.

First of all, being a steam game, is there any way to start fresh, with a brand new account, or is that not an option since it's linked to your steam account? I'm sure I don't have the cards to compete, and I recall the game being pretty good to new players, so I think starting fresh might be the best option.

Also, how is the game these days in terms of activity, releases, and general signs of life? Is the game still active? I found another TCG that I thought I was going to like browsing through steam last night, only to find out that it was dead, and my time invested in learning was wasted because there was no playerbase left.

Any advice on getting into the game, how to build a collection from start, and how to quickly get into playing ranked with a decent deck?

Answers to all of these would be appreciated!
